ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is an internationally recognized standard for a quality management system (QMS). For a laboratory, it shows that administrative processes are organized, but it does not confirm the technical accuracy or validity of specific test results.

ISO 9001 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization that defines requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS). For a laboratory, ISO 9001 certification assesses management processes, not the technical quality of a chemical analysis.

What ISO 9001 certification means for a laboratory

When a laboratory holds ISO 9001 certification, an independent body has audited the facility and confirmed that it follows documented administrative processes. These processes can include standard operating procedures, personnel training, and customer complaint handling.

ISO 9001 evaluates the consistency of the management framework. It does not confirm that specific analytical methods, such as HPLC or Mass Spectrometry, are scientifically valid, accurate, or technically competent. This distinction matters when you review a lab report or Certificate of Analysis (COA): ISO 9001 confirms the lab follows organized procedures, not that any specific test result is correct.

Common misunderstandings about ISO 9001

  • ISO 9001 is sometimes listed alongside analytical techniques as if it were an equivalent stamp of quality. It is not equivalent, because it addresses management processes rather than analytical performance.
  • ISO 9001 is frequently confused with ISO/IEC 17025. ISO/IEC 17025 is specifically designed for testing laboratories and proves actual technical competence for specific methods.
  • ISO 9001 is awarded by certification bodies that audit processes, whereas ISO/IEC 17025 is awarded by accreditation bodies that assess technical performance.
  • ISO 9001 is also distinct from regulatory frameworks such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
