Good Laboratory Practice

Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is a strict regulatory quality system for ensuring the validity and integrity of non-clinical safety studies, including animal toxicity tests. GLP does not apply to routine chemical purity testing of a single batch.

Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is a managerial quality control system used for planning, performing, reporting, and auditing non-clinical health and environmental safety studies. It provides a framework to ensure that safety data for chemicals and pharmaceuticals is reliable, reproducible, and auditable by regulatory bodies.

The scope and application of GLP standards

GLP applies to safety evaluations conducted on test systems, such as live organisms, including studies on acute toxicity or carcinogenicity. The system maintains data integrity through standardized written procedures, trained personnel, and independent oversight. These requirements ensure that regulatory authorities can fully reconstruct and audit the study records years after the work is completed.

Common misunderstandings regarding GLP and peptide testing

  • GLP usually does not cover the chemistry-based purity or identity testing of a manufactured batch.
  • Describing a peptide as 'GLP-tested' for purity is a category error, as GLP is a safety study framework rather than an analytical purity standard.
  • GLP is frequently confused with GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1), which is a physiological hormone and drug class for diabetes and obesity, not a laboratory standard.
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) governs the consistency of product manufacturing, which is distinct from the safety study focus of GLP.
  • ISO 17025 is the appropriate standard for general analytical testing laboratories, whereas GLP is specific to non-clinical safety research.
