COA

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a formal laboratory document that reports measured test results for a specific batch of a product. It provides measured data used to prove the item's identity, purity, and quality.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a batch-specific laboratory quality-control document that links measured test data to a unique lot number. Issued and signed by a testing laboratory, it provides verifiable proof of a product's chemical properties and separates that proof from general marketing material or unverified product descriptions.

Essential components of a complete Certificate of Analysis

  • Identity: The COA confirms whether the substance is the correct molecule, usually by mass spectrometry matching the expected molecular weight.
  • Purity: It reports chemical purity using HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) chromatograms, which help reveal impurities.
  • Quantity: It states the quantified amount present in the specific batch or vial.

How to evaluate a COA and identify red flags

When you evaluate research chemicals or peptides, the Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the main quality-check document because regulatory oversight is limited. Check that the lot number on the COA matches your product, and compare the reported molecular weight with public chemical databases. A reliable COA should show actual analytical charts, such as chromatograms, not only a final percentage.

Red flags include missing dates, unverifiable signatures, and batch numbers that do not match the shipped material. Also separate a COA from nearby documents: a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) states that standards are met without showing data, a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) gives hazard instructions, and a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) gives general usage guidance. Only a genuine COA provides lot-level analytical proof.
