Pesticide residue testing is a laboratory process used to detect, identify, and measure trace amounts of agricultural pest-control chemicals that remain on food and feed products. It checks whether those residues are within legal safety limits.

Pesticide residue testing is a laboratory process used to detect, identify, and measure trace levels of agricultural chemicals in food and feed samples. This analysis identifies substances such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to ensure they do not exceed the legal Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) established by regulatory bodies like the FDA or the European Commission.

The laboratory workflow for pesticide residue testing uses QuEChERS and mass spectrometry

The standard workflow for pesticide residue testing combines QuEChERS sample preparation with highly sensitive detection instruments. QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) is the specific method used to extract residues from the sample material. For the final measurement, laboratories utilize Liquid Chromatography-tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and Gas Chromatography-tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). These technologies are capable of identifying hundreds of different chemicals simultaneously at trace levels, often measured in parts per billion (ppb). ::

Pesticide residue testing is usually irrelevant for synthetic peptides

Pesticide residue testing is generally not a meaningful metric when reviewing a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for synthetic peptides or research chemicals. These tests are designed for agricultural food matrices and do not prove a peptide's structural identity, purity, or residual solvent status. For chemically synthesized products, the relevant safety benchmarks are ICH Q3A for organic impurity profiling and ICH Q3C for residual solvent testing. ::
