ISO 22716

ISO 22716 is an international standard that sets out Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines for the cosmetics industry. It describes how a manufacturing facility should be organized and controlled; it is not a specific laboratory test.

Also called: ISO 22716:2007, cosmetic good manufacturing practice

ISO 22716:2007 is a voluntary international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization that provides guidelines for the production, control, storage, and shipment of cosmetic products. It is a process guideline that defines how manufacturing is managed - not an analytical pass/fail test for a specific laboratory result.

ISO 22716 as a manufacturing quality framework

ISO 22716 operates as a quality management framework for manufacturing facilities, covering personnel hygiene, equipment maintenance, raw material control, and batch documentation. When ISO 22716 certification appears on a lab report or Certificate of Analysis for research chemicals like peptides, it confirms that the facility's general manufacturing processes follow cosmetic guidelines. It does not indicate that the peptide itself has been tested for chemical purity, identity, or safety.

Limits and common confusions around ISO 22716

  • ISO 22716 does not verify the chemical purity, identity, or safety of a peptide.
  • ISO 22716 does not mean the product was manufactured under pharmaceutical guidelines.
  • Actual verification of purity or identity requires specific analytical methods such as HPLC or LC-MS.
  • ISO 17025 certifies a laboratory's technical competence to perform analytical tests and is frequently confused with ISO 22716.
  • Pharmaceutical FDA cGMP is distinct from ISO 22716 and refers to regulatory requirements for clinical-grade therapeutics.
  • GLP is distinct from ISO 22716 and governs nonclinical safety studies.
