Process validation
Process validation is documented scientific proof that a manufacturing process can consistently and reproducibly produce a product that meets its specifications for purity, identity, and quality - not just once, but every time.
Process validation is the systematic evaluation of a production process, such as the chemical synthesis of a peptide, to ensure consistent quality. It moves beyond relying on a single final-product test by proving that a specific synthesis recipe can repeatedly produce the same purity. This ensures that high quality is a result of a controlled process, not just a one-time success.
Process validation follows a three-stage lifecycle
- Process design: The manufacturing process is developed and defined using experimental data.
- Process qualification: The equipment and the synthesis process are verified at a commercial scale.
- Continued process verification: Ongoing monitoring during routine production ensures the process remains stable.
- CoA credibility: Process validation provides long-term reliability for a Certificate of Analysis (CoA). It proves the production method is controlled, meaning a passing result is not just a fluke but a repeatable outcome.
Process validation is different from analytical method validation
Process validation and analytical method validation are routinely confused. Process validation ensures the manufacturing process is consistent, while analytical method validation proves the laboratory tests used to measure the product are accurate. Both are essential for trustworthy lab reporting.
You should be wary of vendors claiming a product is 'fully validated' without distinguishing between manufacturing consistency and test reliability. Such vague claims are a red flag, as they fail to confirm whether the production process itself is stable and controlled.
