ISO/IEC 17020

ISO/IEC 17020 is an international standard that certifies the competence and impartiality of inspection bodies, meaning organizations that examine products or processes and issue a pass/fail judgment. It is not the appropriate standard for analytical laboratory reports, including reports that test chemical purity.

ISO/IEC 17020 is a conformity assessment standard for inspection bodies. It defines requirements for competent, impartial inspections, but it is not proof of precise chemical analysis for peptide Certificates of Analysis (COAs). It does not confirm the accuracy of reported chemical measurements.

If you see ISO/IEC 17020 on a peptide report, it means the organization follows specific inspection procedures. It does not verify the laboratory testing needed to determine peptide purity or identity.

ISO/IEC 17020 defines the requirements for inspection bodies

ISO/IEC 17020 sets requirements for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of inspection bodies. An inspection examines an item and decides whether it meets specific requirements. That decision relies on inspectors' professional expertise and can involve judgment, not only automated data.

The result is usually a clear 'pass' or 'fail', not an exact scientific measurement. The standard focuses on the inspection process, so it is unsuitable for verifying a peptide's chemical composition or purity level.

ISO/IEC 17020 is often misinterpreted in peptide lab reports

  • ISO/IEC 17020 is often confused with ISO/IEC 17025, the relevant standard for testing and calibration laboratories.
  • If a vendor claims ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation for a COA that proves purity or identity by HPLC or Mass Spectrometry, the standard does not match that claim.
  • ISO/IEC 17020 does not define chemical test methods, measure exact quantities, or replace precise equipment and calibration governed by other standards.
  • A legitimate peptide testing lab should hold ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation to show that its scientific methods and quantitative results are valid.
