SERM

SERM stands for Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator. It refers to a class of drugs that act on estrogen receptors in the body. SERM is not a laboratory test or an analytical method.

A Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) is a synthetic drug class that binds to estrogen receptors in the body. It is important to clarify that a SERM is not a laboratory test, an analytical method, or a measuring instrument, as it does not quantify or measure substances in a laboratory setting.

SERMs produce tissue-specific agonist and antagonist effects

SERMs act differently depending on the tissue type, producing opposite effects in various parts of the body. They can stimulate estrogen-like activity (agonist action) in tissues like bone or liver while blocking it (antagonist action) in breast tissue. This occurs because the SERM changes the shape of the estrogen receptor after binding, which triggers different responses based on the tissue. This specific behavior allows SERMs to be used for conditions like ER+ breast cancer, where blocking estrogen is necessary, and osteoporosis, where bone-preserving activity is required.

Listing SERM as a testing parameter on a COA is a red flag

If a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for a peptide or research chemical lists "SERM" as a testing parameter, it should be treated as a red flag. No authoritative source defines SERM as a laboratory test or analytical method. A valid lab report must instead list recognized methods such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for purity testing and Mass Spectrometry (MS) for identity confirmation.

SERM is also frequently confused with SARM (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator). While both are drug classes targeting different receptors, neither term refers to a valid laboratory test.
