SARM
SARM stands for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator, a synthetic, experimental class of drugs that mimic testosterone's muscle- and bone-building effects. In laboratory testing, a SARM is a substance that labs screen for. It is not a test method itself.
Also called: Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator, SARMs
SARMs are synthetic, mostly non-steroidal drugs that bind to androgen receptors and are intended to produce muscle- and bone-building effects comparable to testosterone therapy. No SARMs have received FDA approval for human medical use, although the substances remain under research for potential medical applications.
SARM analysis identifies whether SARMs are present in a sample
SARM analysis is the laboratory process of determining whether SARM substances are present in a given sample; it does not refer to a single specific test method. Laboratories use advanced analytical chemistry techniques such as Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) or High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS) to identify SARM compounds and their metabolites. This analysis can reveal what is actually in a vial, including whether it contains the declared peptide or whether it has been contaminated or adulterated with an unapproved drug.
Key safety, regulatory, and terminology red flags
- SARMs are frequently sold illegally online under misleading labels such as "research chemicals" or "dietary supplements."
- Detecting SARMs in a product is a major safety and regulatory red flag. These substances have been linked to serious health effects including drug-induced liver injury, tendon rupture, dyslipidemia, and increased stroke risk.
- SARMs are classified as performance-enhancing drugs strictly prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), so unwitting consumption could cause an athlete to fail a drug test.
- A common source of confusion: SARM is the drug being measured, whereas SRM (Selected Reaction Monitoring) is an analytical testing technique used in mass spectrometry.
