Research Use Only

Research Use Only (RUO) is an FDA labeling designation for laboratory-stage products. The label must state, "For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures." RUO controls intended use, not purity, safety, or clinical suitability.

Research Use Only applies to laboratory tools and peptides

Research Use Only (RUO) applies to analytical tools, research chemicals, and peptides intended for non-clinical laboratory experiments. Because these products are in the research phase, they are exempt from FDA premarket clearance. This means RUO products lack FDA-validated clinical performance characteristics, such as accuracy or precision. On a lab report or Certificate of Analysis (CoA), RUO means the testing methods do not have FDA-validated clinical reliability.

Common misunderstandings regarding the RUO designation

• RUO on a lab report or Certificate of Analysis (CoA) does not certify safety, purity, pharmaceutical grade, or human use.
• FDA judges true intended use from all evidence, including marketing claims, not the RUO wording alone.
• Human-use marketing, such as claims about muscle building or weight loss, can make an RUO product an unapproved new drug.
• RUO differs from Investigational Use Only (IUO): RUO covers early lab development, while IUO relates to later clinical trial phases.
• RUO is not a legal loophole for selling products for consumption; FDA rejects that use through enforcement actions.
