Glycomics
Glycomics is the comprehensive study of complex sugar molecules, called glycans, that are produced by a cell or organism. In laboratory testing, glycomics profiles sugar attachments on biologic drugs to verify their identity, purity, and safety.
Glycomics is the analytical mapping of the glycome, the complete set of sugar chains (glycans) produced by a cell or organism. It matters mainly for complex, cell-made biologic drugs such as therapeutic antibodies, not for synthetic research peptides or small-molecule chemicals made without living cells.
Glycomics testing supports biologic drug quality
Glycans are not read from a fixed genetic template like DNA. Laboratories therefore release them from proteins, separate them by liquid chromatography, and identify them by mass spectrometry, including the precise molecular mass of each sugar structure.
For biologic drugs, regulators treat correct glycosylation as part of expected quality testing and as Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs). Under frameworks such as ICH Q6B, this data helps show safety, efficacy, stability, purity, and batch-to-batch consistency, so each production cycle remains uniform.

- A missing glycomics section is normal for synthetic research peptides and small-molecule chemicals because they are made without living cells.
- Glycoproteomics maps the specific attachment sites of sugars on proteins, not just the sugar chains themselves.
- Total sugar content assays measure only the bulk amount of sugar, not the identity of individual sugar structures.
