Contract laboratory

A contract laboratory is an external, fee-for-service testing facility hired to run analytical tests on products such as research chemicals and peptides. It tests the client's material and generates test data, but it does not own the project. The hiring company retains ownership.

The main checks performed by a contract laboratory

• Identity: The contract laboratory verifies what the substance is.
• Purity: The contract laboratory checks how clean the substance is; research-grade peptides are expected to be highly pure.
• Safety: The contract laboratory checks for contaminants such as heavy metals or bacteria.

Key trust and terminology risks

A contract laboratory's results are only as trustworthy as the laboratory itself. The FDA has caught some contract laboratories falsifying passing results, which makes it essential to verify a lab's true independence and accreditations, such as ISO/IEC 17025. An independent third-party laboratory is more reliable than an affiliated or in-house laboratory.

A contract laboratory should not be confused with a Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO). A CMO produces the chemicals, while a contract laboratory tests them. Buyers should also be cautious with laboratories claiming to be "GMP-aligned," because that is not the same as holding an official, regulator-audited cGMP certification.
