TAMC

TAMC (Total Aerobic Microbial Count) is a laboratory test that measures the total number of living, oxygen-dependent bacteria and fungi in a sample. The result helps assess whether a product is microbiologically safe.

Also called: Total Aerobic Microbial Count

TAMC is a standardized microbiological test used to evaluate the quality of non-sterile products, such as research chemicals and synthesized peptides. It identifies visible microbial growth and reports results as Colony-Forming Units (CFU) per gram or milliliter to show the level of contamination in a product.

TAMC testing process and microbiological limits

In a TAMC test, a sample is incubated on a growth medium in an oxygen-rich environment at 30-35°C. Visible clusters of microorganisms, called colonies, are then counted and reported as CFU. This measurement allows you to see if a product stays within accepted microbiological safety limits.

Acceptance limits vary depending on the product type. Non-sterile pharmaceutical raw materials typically have a limit of 1,000 CFU/g, while finished products may have stricter requirements down to 100 CFU/g. A high TAMC value often indicates poor manufacturing hygiene, contamination during synthesis, or incorrect storage.

Common interpretation mistakes for TAMC results

  • Confusing TAMC with TYMC: TAMC measures general bacteria, whereas TYMC (Total Combined Yeasts and Molds Count) specifically targets fungi.
  • Purity vs. Safety: An HPLC purity of 99% refers only to chemical purity. It does not reflect microbiological safety, which is measured by TAMC.
  • Pathogens and Endotoxins: TAMC provides a total count but does not identify specific dangerous pathogens or measure endotoxins (toxic bacterial fragments). Specific pathogens require separate tests like USP <62>.
