LIMS

A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is centralized laboratory software used to manage samples, operations, data, and workflows from intake through disposal. It replaces paper logs with digital tracking to maintain a documented chain of custody for every sample. While a LIMS manages the data and processes surrounding measurements, it does not carry out physical or chemical measurements itself.

LIMS features support trust in documented laboratory data

A properly configured LIMS supports trust in documented data through action logs, timestamps, access controls, and electronic signatures. These features record who created, viewed, edited, or approved each record, making every action traceable. LIMS shows process discipline but does not prove analytical correctness

A LIMS shows process discipline and secure documentation, but it does not guarantee the analytical correctness of results. The actual purity and identity values in a lab report depend on the underlying analytical methods used. While the software ensures data is recorded and handled properly, the accuracy of the values depends on the methods, not on the LIMS. ::

• Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN): Handles free-form research documentation, whereas a LIMS is sample-centric.
• Chromatography Data System (CDS): Specifically acquires data from chromatography instruments, which is narrower in scope than a LIMS.
• Laboratory Information System (LIS): Traditionally refers to clinical or patient-lab software serving a different domain.
