Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) is a laboratory technique used to measure the concentration of specific metal elements in a sample. In peptide testing, AAS screens for toxic heavy metals to help assess safety. It does not verify a peptide's identity or purity.

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) is an analytical method used to detect and measure the concentration of specific metal elements. It functions by vaporizing a sample at high heat and measuring the absorption of wavelength-specific light by free atoms. This process enables laboratories to determine the precise amount of a target metal within a substance.

AAS provides heavy-metal safety screening in COAs

  • AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy): Screens for toxic heavy-metal contamination, such as lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, to confirm if a product meets safety limits.
  • Mass Spectrometry (MS): Verifies the molecular identity of a peptide.
  • HPLC: Measures the organic purity of the sample.
  • AAA (Amino Acid Analysis): Determines the net peptide content, showing how much actual peptide is present in a vial.

Distinguishing AAS from AAA and ICP-MS

AAS is frequently confused with AAA because the acronyms look similar, but the two tests serve entirely different purposes. While AAS focuses on heavy-metal safety, AAA (Amino Acid Analysis) measures net peptide content to determine the actual amount of peptide in a vial. AAS provides no information about the peptide itself.

On some modern lab reports, AAS may be replaced by ICP-MS. This newer technique can test multiple metals at once with higher sensitivity than standard AAS, offering a more efficient alternative for heavy-metal testing.
