Botanical identification

Botanical identification is a binary laboratory test that checks whether a plant-derived material matches the claimed plant species and plant part. It answers "Is this the same as the target material?" rather than the open-ended question "What is this material?"

Botanical identification is a laboratory test that confirms whether a plant-derived material matches the species claimed on its label. This process, defined by AOAC International as a Botanical Identification Method (BIM), applies to whole plants, specific parts (such as bark, leaves, or roots), or extracts. It provides a binary YES/NO result but does not identify unknown materials.

Botanical identification depends on complementary methods and confirmed reference material

Botanical identification requires multiple complementary analytical methods and independently confirmed reference materials to address the chemical complexity of plants. Laboratories utilize macroscopic and microscopic examination, chemical fingerprinting (HPTLC, HPLC, UHPLC), DNA barcoding, and organoleptic assessment to verify identity. This verification must occur before purity or contaminant claims are assessed, as powdered materials make visual identification unreliable and unverified identities invalidate subsequent testing results.

Botanical identification has clear limits

  • Botanical identification is not purity testing, which focuses on quantifying impurities.
  • Botanical identification is not potency or assay testing, which measures the concentration of marker compounds.
  • Botanical identification is not DNA-only authentication.
  • Validation methods for raw botanicals cannot be transferred to extracts without separate validation.
  • The process is exclusive to botanicals and does not apply to peptides or synthetic research chemicals.
